Supercomputers
were first introduced in the 1960s by Seymour
Cray at Control Data Corporation (CDC. When
Cray left the company and madehis own company
called Cray Research, he took over the supercomputer
market with his new designs, holding the
top spot in supercomputing for 5 years (1985–1990
Today, supercomputers are typically one-of-a-kind
custom designs produced by "traditional"
companies such as IBM and HP.
The National Center for
Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) started
in January 1986. The center has earned and
maintains an international reputation in
high-performance computing, networking,
storage, data mining, and scientific visualization.
